Results from The Bricker 7k 2019 – Brewery Run Series

Award winners at The Bricker 7k 2019

The final race of the 2019 Brewery Run Series had the biggest turn-out yet with 42 runners completing The Bricker 7k. Herman Mentz and Sara Tyne of Sechelt were the overall winners, each taking home a growler from The Bricker.

Start of The Bricker 7k 2019

Starting and finishing at Mason and Norwest Bay in West Sechelt, the route took the runners past farms along Mason Road, past breathtaking vistas of Sechelt Inlet from Heritage Road, and through shady trails from the Crowston Connector back to Mason. A refreshing breeze kept the heat of the sun at bay, but participants still found it quite warm and made good use of the two water stations provided.

Overall winners Herman Mentz and Sara Tyne

Unlike last week’s Tapworks 5k, the battle for first overall in the 7k was a close one, with Mentz edging out Byron Fader of Powell River by just four seconds. Taking a strong third 41 seconds later was Sechelt’s Jamie Leveque.

The women’s race was a different story with Tyne finishing well over a minute ahead of her nearest rival. Second and third were much closer, with Alexa Dornbierer of Sechelt crossing the line only nine seconds ahead of Katie Oliver of Gibsons.

There were a number of tight races for first place among the age categories. Tamas Mihalyi was just six seconds ahead of Stephen Rhodes in the Men’s 50+ division; the Women’s 40-49 division saw Roberta Sim finish only ten seconds ahead of Donna Findlay; and Brenda Simpson gapped Nadine Slingerland by only eight seconds in the Women’s 50+ group.

After enjoying fruit and goodies at the finish line, participants and volunteers headed over to The Bricker for the awards ceremony, a well-earned cider (included with the race entry) and breakfast from The Manor Born foods.

Leveque was the lucky winner of a pair of shoes from PaceSetter Athletic Footwear, in the Grand Prize Draw for the series. His name was drawn from among those who ran at least three of the series races.

The organizers would like to thank the wonderful team of volunteers who made this event possible: Alison Rhodes, Randi Johnsen, Mike Meggiato, Conchita Harding, Greg Carter, Kati Saarinen, Lori Leveque, Susan Blair, Randy Eistetter, Stephen Rhodes, and Michelle Von Schleinitz.

The next local road race hosted by PaceSetter is coming up August 11th in Garden Bay. Register now for the Four Lakes 10k + 3k Family Fun Run/Walk, and enjoy a morning (or a whole day) at beautiful Katherine Lake Park.

Results from Tapworks 5k 2019 – Brewery Run Series

Tapworks 5k winners

Race #3 of the series was hot and sunny just like in 2018. A total of 31 runners challenged themselves on the scenic course which took them from Armour’s Beach along the oceanfront path, then back and forth through the residential area of Gibsons Landing below the bluff. A quick jaunt through the Arrowhead Park trail provided some respite from the hot sun before heading back to the seaside path for the final kilometre back to Armour’s Beach. Quite a few finishers cooled off with a refreshing ocean swim before heading over to Tapworks for the post-run festivities.

Will Rice and Liz Cullen, winners, Tapworks 5kPowell River’s Will Rice was in a class of his own, blasting around the course in 18:19 for the overall win. Will is under 19 so his dad Tony (who also raced) was the lucky recipient of the first place growler!

Second and third overall spots were claimed by Sechelt’s Jamie Leveque and Gibsons’ Theo Kontekakis in 21:24 and 21:53, respectively.

First female finisher and 4th overall was Gibsons’ Liz Cullen in 21:59. Cullen was also the overall female winner at Race #2 (10.1k at The 101). Second and third women to cross the line several minutes later were Kelsey Mulvihill and Katie Oliver, just 14 seconds apart.

Amazing performance of the day goes to Jacob Norris of Sechelt, who finished the 5k in a very impressive 31:09 – at six years of age!

Huge thanks to all our wonderful volunteers: Randi Johnsen, Alison Rhodes, Deanne Shuttleworth, Conchita Harding, Greg Carter, Kati Saarinen, Brent Sanford, Alex Nightingale, Maria Nightingale, and Michelle von Schleinitz.

Overall winners each received a growler from Tapworks; top 3 in each age group received medals; and a number of draw prizes from PaceSetter and Tapworks were given away to runners and volunteers. Each participant and volunteer also received a ticket for 1 free beer or cider and enjoyed watermelon and cookies.
